Grenville County area is a historic county in the Canadian province of Ontario. The county was created in 1792, and named in honour of William Wyndham Grenville, 1st Baron Grenville, Secretary of State in 1790. The First settlers were United Empire Loyalists from the United States. Grenville County merged with Leeds County in 1850 to create Leeds and Grenville County. ==Original Townships== *Augusta (still exists), surveyed in 1787, it was named in honour of Princess Augusta Sophia, second daughter of George III (community centers, Prescott, Maitland, Lord Mills, Algonquin, Maynard, Garretton) *Edwardsburgh (now Edwardsburgh/Cardinal), Edwardsburg Township had an area of *Oxford, also known as Oxford-On-the-Rideau Township area Surveyed in 1791, the first settlers were nearly all officers. (Now part of North Grenville) *South Gower, area was settled in 1803 mostly by retired army officers it is now part of North Grenville. *Wolford (now the Village of Merrickville-Wolford). The township was and opened 1797. It was named for the Devonshire seat of John Graves Simcoe.
